Beginning Guitar

This course is designed for students with no previous Mariachi guitar/vihuela experience. Students will receive guidance and direction in the following areas: correct posture, note reading, aural skills, flat picking, singing songs, rhythmic patterns, chord study, finger picking styles (when appropriate), melody construction, musical forms, improvisation, and music theory. Performance opportunities.

Beginning Violin

This course is designed for students who are interested in learning to play Mariachi violin.  Students will receive guidance and direction in solving problems related to playing the violin on a beginning level. This course concentrates on the development of note-reading skills, aural sills, rhythmic patterns, intonation, and tonality inherent to Mariachi music. The importance of sustained group and individual effort is stressed. Performance opportunities.

Mariachi Ensemble (Performing Group)

This course is designed for students with experience playing violin, guitar, trumpet, guitarrón and singing. The purpose of this course is to allow students to perform in an ensemble which has a selected membership and which specializes in performing simple to complex mariachi arrangements/compositions.  Students who participate in the Mariachi Ensemble are eligible to receive the Mariachi Academy Scholarship of Achievement when they graduate from high school. Auditions required.

This course is designed for students 18 and over. This course will focus on the fundaments of guitar and singing. This course emphasizes the development of style, rhythmic ability and skills inherent to performance. Students will receive guidance and direction in solving problems related to playing the guitar on a beginning to advanced level and will learn many of the different styles, skills and techniques required to become a successful mariachi guitarist. Areas of concentration include: correct posture, note reading, aural skills, flat picking, singing songs, rhythmic patterns, chord study, musical forms, improvisation and performing experiences. A progression of technical proficiency is expected. Please see a Mariachi Academy instructor for further information.

As members of the Mariachi Academy of Connecticut, students and parents/guardians are required to pay monthly tuition to take part in all courses, events, and performances. The tuition fee covers instruction, program t-shirt, music binder, performance accessories and administrative expenses. Tuition vouchers are available upon request and with director’s approval. Please call for details.
